We live in a technology-driven society where our electronic devices have replaced intrapersonal relationships. Although medicine has benefitted from many of these advances, nothing can replace the human touch to comfort, heal, and impart our feelings. It takes a special medical office to recognize the value of ancient healing rituals. At the Boston Sports & Shoulder Center, 02451 acupuncture is used to supplement BSSC’s medical care and provide expert musculoskeletal therapy support. At our Waltham office, our traditional, time-tested therapies include Chinese massage therapy, acupuncture, cupping and cold laser therapy. They are used in post-op pain management, frozen shoulder, scar tissue mobilization, muscle strain, muscle imbalance, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and other nerve entrapment, plantar fasciitis, and back and neck pain.

02451 acupuncture is based on an ancient, complex Chinese diagnostic and healing system which had its beginnings thousands of years ago. Specialized, thin needles are painlessly inserted in a specific pattern along energy pathways called meridians. The needles are left in place for 30-45 minutes and function to release energy blockages believed to cause disease. As an integral part of Traditional Chinese Medicine, acupuncture is used to treat many illnesses, reduce the side effects of drug withdrawal, and maintain optimum energy levels. Needles are placed in specific acupuncture points called ‘tsubos’ along the 12 meridian lines to release ‘qi’ energy and reduce the stagnation which results in disease. Our patients find the treatments to be incredibly relaxing and effective in reducing musculoskeletal pain.
At the Boston Sports and Shoulder Center, our mission is to provide our patients with the highest quality and top-of-the-line orthopedic care. We are dedicated to promoting life-enhancing care to our patients required for healthy living and healthy aging. If you are hobbling around due to a hip condition, Boston hip surgery may be the right course of treatment for you. Based upon the condition of your hip joint, you and one of our specialists have several treatment options from which to choose. An osteotomy is a procedure where either the head of the thighbone or the socket is cut and realigned to take pressure off of the hip joint. This procedure is used only rarely to treat osteoarthritis of the hip. In hip resurfacing, the damaged bone and cartilage in the acetabulum (hip socket) is removed and replaced with a metal shell. The head of the femur, however, is not removed, but instead capped with a smooth metal covering. For total hip replacement, your doctor will remove both the damaged acetabulum and femoral head, and then position new metal, plastic or ceramic joint surfaces to restore full mobility to your hip.

When it comes to getting the right person for Boston hip surgery, trust our consortium of expert orthopedists. This experienced orthopedic office leads the way in innovative orthopedic care. One reason for shoulder pain is damage to the rotator cuff. The rotator cuff is a group of tendons and four muscles that connect the upper arm bone, the humerus, to the shoulder blade. Their function is to stabilize the shoulder by keeping it within the socket and help to lift and rotate the arm. When a rotator cuff tear occurs, there can be a lot of pain and/or limited motion. Damage to the rotator cuff is a common source of pain and disability in adults. After a thorough examination, your shoulder doctor in Brookline will recommend treatments for shoulder pain based upon the cause of your injury. These may include tears, strains, dislocation, arthritis, tendinitis, or bursitis. In the case of a torn rotator cuff, one or more of the rotator cuff tendons are no longer fully attached to the head of the humerus. A rotator cuff tear can happen as a result of a single traumatic event or can develop gradually as a due to repeated micro-traumas. An acute tear occurs abruptly as the result of a fall, lifting a heavy object with a jerking motion, or along with other injuries sustained in an accident such as a broken collarbone and dislocated shoulder and are typically accompanied by immediate and intense pain. Most rotator cuff tears fall into the category of degenerative tears. These are a result of overuse and repeated rotator cuff injury due to straining or irritating the tendons. While degenerative changes to the rotator cuff occurs naturally with age, some occupations and hobbies that involve repetitive stress put one at greater risk for rotator cuff tears.

The elbow is a relatively simple hinge joint which only allows flexion and extension. The elbow joint occurs at the junction the humerus or upper arm bone, the ulna which is the larger of the two forearm bones and the radius bone. At BSSC, the Brookline orthopedist will carefully examine your arm to assess the scope of your injury. Injuries to the elbow are caused by sports or recreational activities, work-related tasks, home projects, and falls. Most elbow injuries in children occur during activities, such as sports or play, or are the result of accidental falls. The risk for injury is higher in contact sports such as wrestling, football, or soccer, or high-speed sports such as biking, in-line skating, skiing, hockey, snowboarding, or skateboarding. Elbows, forearms, wrists, hands, and fingers are the most affected body areas. Any injury in a child or teen that occurs near a joint may injure the growing end (growth plate) of long bones and needs to be evaluated. Older adults have a higher risk for injuries and fractures because they lose muscle mass and bone strength as they age.

At Boston Sports & Shoulder Center, your Brookline orthopedist will work with you to come up with the best treatment strategy. We understand how difficult every day activities can be when your arm is injured, so we do our utmost to get you fully functioning as quickly as possible. We work with skilled physical therapists to ensure that your recovery includes strengthening exercises and preventive strategies to help you avoid further injury.

At Boston Sports & Shoulder Center, our primary mission is to provide the highest quality and leading edge orthopedic care to our community. Our team of providers treats each patient and their family with sincere compassion and helps to guide them through the healthcare process. Our orthopedists in Boston have soundly established themselves in the orthopedic community. All are Board-certified fellowship trained, with advanced training in their respective fields. We are proud to be the home of “Boston’s Top Doctors” with a Boston Magazine award every year since 2006. All of our physicians hold academic appointments at Tufts University School of Medicine and actively teach in the New England Baptist Hospital Sports Medicine Fellowship Program. We train the young doctors of today to build and enhance quality care for future generations. Our wide range of experience sets us apart, but it is our dedication and passion for treating each patient with individualized care that defines us. We have very high standards and are extremely proud to offer life-enhancing care to give our patients the active and mobile lifestyle required for healthy living and healthy aging. If you have injured your knee and are considering Boston knee surgery, consider us first.

Using the most advanced procedures for Boston knee surgery, we employ arthroscopic techniques to diagnose and repair the damage. Unlike traditional surgery where large incisions are made, arthroscopy uses very small incisions, about the size of a grain of rice. An endoscope, a small camera with a light at the end of it, is placed through the incisions into the knee joint. The images are relayed back to a large screen where the doctor can find and repair the joint damage. Many of these procedures can be performed as an outpatient and healing is much faster that traditional surgery. Robotic-assisted technology is used to enable our surgeons to plan partial knee replacement procedures by using three-dimensional computer imaging based on a CT scan. This allows orthopedic surgeons to determine optimal implant size, position, and alignment for each individual patient, and to map out accurately the areas of bone they want to remove. During surgery, the robotic arm system provides visual, auditory, and tactile control to help assure that surgeons cut away only the damaged bone. Recovery time is relatively fast and post-op discomfort is minimal.

Our high standards and innovative orthopedic services make BSSC the only place to come if you are looking for Boston knee surgery. We have three locations in the Boston area for your convenience. Give us a call today.
