The wrist is a complex joint that bridges the hand to the forearm. It is actually a collection of multiple bones and joints. The bones comprising the wrist include the distal ends of the radius and ulna, 8 carpal bones, and the proximal portions of the 5 metacarpal bones. All of these bones participate in complex movements that allow variable mobility of the hand. The hand is capable of three types of motion: flexing and extending, pronating and supinating, and deviating from side to side. In order to maintain mobility without sacrificing stability, the wrist joint has a complex configuration of ligaments. The joints of the wrist are surrounded by a fibrous capsule and are held together by an array of ligaments that provide carpal stability. Injury to these structures are assessed by the Boston wrist doctor and may include trigger fingers, carpal tunnel syndrome, and DeQuervain’s syndrome.

At Boston Sports & Shoulder Center, your Boston wrist doctor will carefully examine your wrist injury to make the most accurate diagnosis and will work with you to come up with the best treatment strategy. We understand how difficult every day activities can be when your hand is injured, and we do our utmost to get you fully functioning as quickly as possible.

When you are considering total shoulder replacement, BSSC offers expert care. The shoulder joint is ball-and-socket joint made up of two articulations: the glenohumeral joint (where the head of the humerus – arm bone – meets the scapula) and the acromioclavicular joint (where the shoulder blade meets the collar bone). Normal wear and tear or an injury to the head of the humerus often results in shoulder arthritis. Although total shoulder replacement surgery is not as common as hip or knee replacement, the arthritic surface of the ball is replaced with a metal ball. A stem is press fitted in the inside of the arm bone and the socket is resurfaced with a high density polyethylene component. After a general or regional anesthetic, this procedure is performed through an incision between the deltoid and the pectoralis major muscles on the front of the shoulder. It includes release of adhesions and contractures and removal of bone spurs that may inhibit full range of motion or make movements painful. Our Boston shoulder surgery team can perform this procedure in less than two hours. Our post-op follow-up includes rehabilitative exercises to restore strength and full function to your shoulder.

Boston shoulder surgery is performed by Dr. Andrew Jawa who does more than 200 total shoulder replacements per year and has extensive experience with both primary and revision shoulder replacements. Dr. Jawa and his team are committed to improving patient outcomes and satisfaction while reducing complications. Patient-reported outcomes are carefully tracked in a database that allows Dr. Jawa and his team to monitor outcome trends, identify areas of potential improvement, and report outcomes and complications to the public. Dr. Jawa believes that transparency empowers patients and their families to make informed decisions about their treatment. So if total shoulder replacement is right for you, BSSC is the right place to come.

Our Boston orthopedic office will always seek non-surgical solutions to your sports injury when appropriate. Stem cell injection therapy is playing an important role in orthopedic regenerative medicine. Stem cells are harvested from either the patient, through bone marrow, or a young donor source. These injections are used to treat orthopedic sports injuries and degenerative conditions like osteoarthritis and rotator cuff disease. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections use concentrated platelets of a patient’s own blood to enhance the healing process. They are used to treat chronic degenerative conditions of bone, tendon and cartilage, and acute sports injuries. We use ultrasound to accurately guide the needle directly to the affected area. This technique is used for cortisone, hyaluronic acid, stem cell, and PRP injections. Our complementary medicine treatments for your sports injuries have also shown tremendous promise. We offer expert muscle and skeletal therapy from a licensed acupuncturist in our Waltham office. In addition, Chinese massage therapy has helped with post-op pain management, frozen shoulder, scar tissue mobilization, muscle strain, muscle imbalance, tendonitis, carpal tunnel syndrome and other nerve entrapment, plantar fasciitis, and back and neck pain. Needles, cupping therapy and cold laser therapy are used as stand alone treatments or in additional to other treatments.
