The hamstrings are the three muscles in the back of the thigh that allow you to extend your leg straight behind your body and to bend your knee. When any one of these muscles stretches beyond its limit during physical activity, injury can result. Pulled hamstrings can be caused by many risk factors. The most obvious cause is a sports injury. Sports that require sprinting or running, or other activities such as dancing that might require extreme stretching, make a hamstring injury more likely. In addition, once you’ve had one hamstring injury, you’re more likely to have another one, especially if you try to resume all your activities at pre-injury levels of intensity before your muscles have time to heal and rebuild strength. Our orthopedist in Dedham also affirms that another cause is poor flexibility and possibly muscle imbalance.

You might hear a ‘pop’ when the hamstring tears and it can be quite painful. In many instances, rest can treat a minor tear. But when walking is difficult, it is importance to get the proper treatment for a pulled hamstring as quickly as possible. The initial goal of treatment is to reduce pain and swelling. To accomplish this, your orthopedist in Dedham may recommend that you take a break from strenuous activities to allow the injury to heal. Using a cane avoids you from putting your full weight on your injured leg which gives it a chance to heal. Ice the area or wrap it up with a compression bandage. Elevate the leg to reduce swelling and take an over the counter anti-inflammatory. Physical therapy exercises may be prescribed for the hamstring pull. The doctor may give you an injection at the site to reduce inflammation and address the pain. In extreme cases, when the muscle has pulled free from where it’s connected to your pelvis or shinbone or severe tears, our skilled orthopedic surgeons can reattach it.
